5 Ways to Save on Remodeling the Bathroom

Did you know that a Bathroom Remodel can cost almost the same, if not more than a Kitchen? The Bathroom has a lot more plumbing fixtures and surface areas to protect and waterproof, i.e., floors, backsplashes, shower walls and shower floor. Here are 5 money saving ways to cut costs when you are thinking about a basic facelift for your Bathroom, to replace what you have.

1. Floors - Vinyl

Instead of hard surfaces like tile, think soft like vinyl. Mannington and Armstrong have some beautiful patterned sheet vinyl on the market, and a lot less expensive in materials and especially installation costs, than tile. No grout and low maintenance!

2. Vanity - Ready Made

Consider a ready-made free standing vanity. A lot less money than a custom built one. Take a look at Kohler, their models feature some great storage ideas with easy access. Most come with soft close doors and drawers, another nice feature.

3. Vanity Countertop - Solid Surfaces

A solid surface (synthetic) material like Hi-Macs or Corian will save you money over stone, such as quartz or granite. And it doesn’t have to be boring! There are hundreds of colors and textures available due to advances in technology. NOTE: With the cost savings, you might consider having a 4 or 5”h mosaic glass tile backsplash to add a little luxury and special accent.

4. Shower Walls and Floor - Synthetics & Composites

Again instead of tile, consider synthetic Shower walls such as Kohler’s Choreograph system. Available in 11 colors and textures, built-in wall niches, it all installs quickly, and is very elegant! For the Shower floor, there are a variety of acrylic and synthetic composites models out there with built-in drains. No grout and more low maintenance!

NOTE: Re shower curtain vs. glass door, you will save $$$ if you can start with a curtain and liner. Could always add a glass door later, when expenses permit. However if its a larger custom shower, you might consider no door. And, no maintenance!

5. Plumbing Fixtures - Chrome

Chrome finishes are typically the lowest or entry level in price point, it only goes up from there, and quick! Brushed Nickel would be the next one up, with Oil Rubbed Bronze or a Matte Black close to the highest in price, approximately 30% increase and more.
